BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team held off a second half comeback from the Buffalo Bulls in a 58-43 win on Wednesday night.
The Broncos swept a two-game season series against Buffalo for the first time in program history on Wednesday night. WMU built a large lead in the first half that helped the team to its 58-43 victory as the game got within five points at the start of the fourth quarter. For the second game in a row, senior guard
Alli Carlson led the Brown and Gold with 17 points while going 5-of-11 from the floor. Senior forward
Ariana Wilkes also poured in double figures for Western Michigan with a career-high 13 points while grabbing six boards.
The Broncos got off to a quick start at Alumni Arena, scoring the first five points of the game in under a minute and a half. WMU's defense also disrupted Buffalo as the team forced three straight turnovers from the Bulls. The Brown and Gold had a comfortable seven-point lead at the media timeout of the first quarter. Out of the timeout, Western Michigan continued its dominance on the floor scoring eight points over the final three and a half minutes. The Broncos limited Buffalo to only three points in the first ten minutes while they led by 14.
The Bulls scored first in the second quarter, but it didn't take WMU long to get back to its high-scoring ways from the first. The Brown and Gold put together a 10-2 run for more than four minutes to grow their lead to 20 points. Western Michigan made four triples over the last 10 minutes of the first half to go 40% from behind the arc. The Broncos headed into the locker room with a commanding 19-point lead behind three players with six points.
WMU's offense had a slow start going into the second half as Buffalo added five early points. Carlson had the first field goal of the half for the Brown and Gold with a floater in the point almost four minutes in. Western Michigan was limited to seven points in the third as they went 2-of-10 from the floor. Going into the final frame the Broncos lead had dwindled to only seven.
While the Bulls had the first basket of the fourth to make it a five-point game, WMU was able to return to a double figure lead in under four minutes. The Brown and Gold added nine quick points as Carlson and Muguira made three straight triples in 2:40 to force a Buffalo timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bulls had a five-point run to bring Western Michigan's lead back into single digits with three and a half minutes to go.
The Broncos pushed their lead back into double figure territory as Wilkes four straight at the line in under a minute. WMU was in the bonus for the final two minutes of the game and were able to get a few chances from the charity stripe. Carlson made five of her six attempts in the last minute and a half of the contest, helping the Brown and Gold to their 58-43 victory.

Alli Harness set a new career-high on Wednesday night, leading Western Michigan under the glass with eight rebounds. Carlson had the team high in both assists and steals with five helpers and three takeaways. While redshirt senior

WMU returns home for its final stretch in Kalamazoo during the regular season. The Brown and Gold will honor its five seniors on Saturday afternoon as they take on the UMass Minutewomen. Tip-off against UMass is set for noon on Feb. 28.
