MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Western Michigan freshman
Brady Swartz collected the first double-double of his collegiate career on Saturday in an 83-70 loss at Central Michigan.
Swartz tallied 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to become the fourth different Bronco to record a double-double this season.
Jayden Brewer led Western Michigan (9-18, 3-11 MAC) in scoring for the evening with 16 points, while
EJ Ryans chipped in 15. Brewer nearly recorded a double-double of his own, securing eight rebounds.
Western Michigan grabbed the edge early, getting out to a 7-2 lead in the game's opening minutes. With the margin at 10-8, Central Michigan (9-18, 5-9) used a 13-2 run to move ahead, 21-12. The Chippewas extended the gap to double-digits for the first time at 28-18, but the Broncos countered with six straight to get it back down to 28-24. An eight-point spurt put CMU ahead 40-28 with one minute remaining in the half, before a five-point burst trimmed WMU's deficit to 40-33 at the break.
The Brown and Gold continued to work their way back into it after the intermission, with Ryans taking a steal all the way to the other end for a layup to get WMU to within three, 45-42, with 16 minutes remaining. CMU countered with 10 consecutive points to extend its cushion back into double-digits, 55-42. Six of the next eight points got Western Michigan to within nine, 57-48, but moments later, the Chippewas extended their advantage back into double-figures, where it stayed for the remainder of the evening.
The Broncos shot 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the floor in the contest, while CMU made 49.0 percent (25-of-51) of its field goal attempts.
