Hockey Collects Shootout Win Over Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Western Michigan hockey team picked up two points in the NCHC standings, winning a shootout against Colorado College on Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.

Sam Huck lit the lamp for the Broncos in the second period, while William Whitelaw was the shootout hero. Hampton Slukynsky was dominant throughout the game, making 28 saves in 65 minutes of action. He added three more in the shootout to cap off the big night.

FIRST PERIOD
CC would get the game's first power play not even a minute into the period, as WMU was sent off for boarding. The Tigers would do nothing on the chance, and the Brown and Gold easily worked back to full strength.

Later in the period, Ty Henricks nearly put the Broncos in front. His shot out front was saved by Colorado College goaltender Kaidan Mbereko. With the game moving to the back half of the frame, the Tigers would get on the board to take a 1-0 lead.

Down the stretch, Bobby Cowan would get a great look on a breakaway. However, Mbereko was again there to make the save. WMU entered the second period trailing by one.

SECOND PERIOD
Western Michigan came out with more energy in the second, getting a few good looks before finding the back of the net to tie the game. After Mbereko couldn't corral a Cowan shot, Huck was there to bang home the rebound to bring the game to 1-1.

A few minutes later, CC was sent off for cross checking, giving the Brown and Gold its first power play of the night. Henricks and Samuel Sjolund had the best looks on net, but the Tigers got their skater back.

However, Colorado College would go back to the box not long after that. Sjolund rang a shot off the post, and the Broncos threatened with several other shots. But CC was again able to get back to 5-on-5 hockey.

WMU would kill off a CC power play down the stretch, and the two teams entered the third period deadlocked at 1-1.

THIRD PERIOD
After a couple Slukynsky saves to start the period, WMU was assessed a holding penalty. As it had all game, Western Michigan locked down defensively and got back to even strength.

A little bit later, Iiro Hakkarainen and Huck had looks on net saved by Mbereko. In the back half of the frame, Cowan and Huck put pressure on the CC defense, leading to a penalty on the Tigers. Despite some good looks, Colorado College would get the kill.

WMU was given a penalty with under two minutes to play in regulation and sent the game to overtime tied at 1-1.

OVERTIME
After killing off the rest of the CC man advantage, Zaccharya Wisdom had a pair of looks out front that nearly won the game. Later, Hakkarainen tried his luck on net, but neither team would light the lamp. The game moved to a shootout.

SHOOTOUT
After a Slukynsky save to open the shootout, Whitelaw ripped a shot by Mbereko to push the Broncos in front early. That would be all Slukynsky needed, as he slammed the door on the next two shots to help the Brown and Gold earn the extra point in the standings.

UP NEXT
The Broncos and Tigers will finish up the series tomorrow night at 8 PM ET.
