KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team dropped a 90-79 decision to Toledo on Wednesday night at University Arena.
Justice Williams netted 22 points to lead the way for the Broncos (8-16, 2-9 MAC), while
Brady Swartz narrowly missed out on a double-double with 13 points and a career-high tying nine rebounds.
Trey Lewis tallied 11 points off of the WMU bench.
Western Michigan hit six of its first eight three-point attempts to get out to an 18-11 advantage in the opening five-and-a-half minutes. Toledo (13-12, 7-5) came back with a 10-3 spurt to even the contest at 21-21. With WMU back up by a point, 27-26, the Rockets ran off seven in a row to grab a 33-27 edge. The Broncos used an 8-2 stretch to close the gap to 42-41, but the visitors tallied the final eight points of the period to take a 50-41 cushion into halftime.
After the Rockets notched the first point out of the break to briefly bring the margin to double-digits, 51-41, Western Michigan tallied seven straight points to close the gap to 51-48. At 53-50, Toledo used a 14-2 run to bring its advantage up to 67-52. Just past the midway point of the half, the Broncos tallied eight consecutive points to whittle the deficit to 74-67. WMU got to within seven on a few other occasions, but was unable to get any closer.
Western Michigan shot 43.1 percent (28-of-65) for the evening, while Toledo made 59.3 percent (32-of-54) from the field. The Brown and Gold enjoyed a 36-30 rebounding advantage, including a 12-4 edge on the offensive glass.
The Broncos hit the road on Saturday afternoon for their second matchup of the season against Eastern Michigan. Tip in Ypsilanti is slated for 2 pm on
