Broncos Complete Sweep of Bulldogs After 5-1 Road Win

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The eighth-ranked Western Michigan hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Ferris State after a 5-1 win at Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday night. 

The captain started off the scoring early in the first period. WMU was on the power play and Neumeier fired a shot from the center point and Wisdom redirected it into the net for his first goal of the season. Neumeier picked up his second assist of the weekend, while Benák tallied his first collegiate appoint with the second assist. 

Cowan pushed the lead to 2-0 at 10:59 in the first period on his first goal of the season. Benák had the puck in the bottom of the left circle and sent it towards the crease where it redirected off of Cowan and into the net. Wisdom also picked up a helper on the goal. 

The Broncos extended the lead to 3-0 at 6:49 in the second period on Väisänen's second of the weekend. Benák cycled the puck to Alex Calbeck at the left point and he sent it on to Väisänen at the right point. Väisänen then fired a shot from the top of the right circle through traffic and into the net. The assist gave Benák his first career three-point game. It also marks the first three assist game by a Bronco since Ty Henricks had three against Michigan on Oct. 25, 2025. 

Ferris State got on he board with a power play goal by Adyn Merrick at 11:11 in the second period, cutting the lead to 3-1. 

Nehring lit the lamp at 9:56 in the third period, redirecting a shot by Theo Wallberg into the net for his first season and pushing the lead to 4-1. Colby Woogk also picked up an assist on the goal. 

Whitelaw tallied his second goal of the weekend at 18:15 in the third period, making it 5-1. His shot came from the center point and over the left shoulder of the FSU goalie. Benák and and Cowan picked up assists on the game's final goal. 

Western Michigan is back in action next weekend with a home-and-home against Notre Dame. The Broncos host the Fighting Irish on Friday at 7 p.m. and then head to South Bend on Saturday for a 6 p.m. start.
