Miller, Broncos Blank Notre Dame to Complete Series Sweep

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The sixth-ranked Western Michigan hockey team got 17 saves from sophomore goaltender Quentin Miller in a 4-0 victory at Notre Dame on Saturday night to complete the sweep of the home-and-home series for the Brown and Gold.

Miller's 17 saves helped him to his second shutout in his first four games as a Bronco. The sophomore has yielded just two goals in those four contests, with WMU outscoring its opponents by a margin of 21-2 in its 4-0-0 start to the campaign.

The Broncos had four different goal-scorers on the night, with Nicholas Sykora, Ty Henricks, Bobby Cowan and Adam Benák all lighting the lamp. Henricks, Cowan and Benák all scored for the second straight game against the Fighting Irish. Benák added an assist for a multi-point night and the defenseman duo of Zack Sharp and Theo Wallberg each registered a pair of helpers.

Western Michigan was out on the front foot early, tallying three goals in the opening period. Sykora opened the scoring at the 6:40 mark for the Brown and Gold. Sharp fired in a shot from the point that was saved, and Tyler MacKenzie nudged the rebound over to Sykora, who buried it for his second of the season.

The Broncos kept the pressure on, and it paid off with just under eight minutes to go in the first. Benák slid the puck across to Wallberg at the left point, and the defenseman sent one goalwards that was redirected into the net by Henricks for his second of the weekend. Minutes later, WMU broke up a Notre Dame attack and Sharp found a streaking Cowan, who moved in on goal and snapped one home from the right faceoff circle to make it 3-0.

The Brown and Gold added their fourth and final tally of the night a little more than five minutes into the second period. Wallberg dropped the puck off to William Whitelaw near the left point, and Whitelaw stick-handled his way through traffic to find a lane to send one towards the net which was redirected home by Benák for his second in as many nights.

The first power play of the evening for either side came just past the halfway point, with WMU coming up empty on the man advantage. The Broncos carried a 4-0 advantage into the final frame.

Notre Dame was called for a major penalty in the early stages of the third period, but despite putting five shots on net, the Broncos did not convert. The Fighting Irish had a power play just past the midway point of the frame, but Miller kept the shutout in tact with a pair of saves.

Western Michigan continues its four-game stretch against Big Ten foes next weekend, starting on Friday night with a visit to #2 Michigan. The Broncos then return to Lawson Arena on Saturday evening for an exhibition tilt against #5 Wisconsin.
