OXFORD, Ohio – Western Michigan senior
Jayden Brewer reached the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career on Tuesday night in an 87-76 loss at Miami.
Brewer reached 1,000 career points with his first basket of the night, a transition layup in the opening minutes of the contest. The Indianapolis native paced Western Michigan (6-9, 0-3 MAC) in scoring with 19 points, and narrowly missed out on a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
Joining Brewer in double-figures for the Broncos were
Justice Williams, who netted 14 points off of the bench, and
Jalen Griffith, who tallied 10 points.
Carson Vis posted nine points and five rebounds, with
Max Burton contributing eight points and six boards.
Miami (16-0, 4-0) built a 13-6 edge in the early stages of the contest. The Broncos countered with a 9-3 stretch, capped by a Brewer old-fashioned, three-point play, to close the gap to one, 16-15. The RedHawks slowly built their lead back to seven, 31-24, but WMU whittled it down to a 39-35 deficit at halftime.
The Broncos started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers by
Trey Lewis and Griffith to take their first lead of the night, 41-39. Miami went back ahead a few minutes later, tallying seven straight points to grab a 48-43 edge. At 52-47, the hosts used a 7-2 spurt to push the margin into double-figures, 59-49. A 12-4 push then gave the RedHawks their biggest cushion of the night, 74-57, and they led by double-digits for the remainder of the evening.
WMU connected on 42.4 percent (28-of-66) from the floor for the evening, while Miami shot 50.0 percent (27-of-54).
Western Michigan begins a stretch of four out of five at home on Saturday afternoon as it welcomes Eastern Michigan to University Arena for a 1 pm tip. For tickets to any WMU men's basketball home game, visit
