SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Headlined by the record-breaking DMR team, the Western Michigan track and field squad had an outstanding opening day at the Meyo Invitational this evening.
Ava Kurczewski,
Mabinty Kebe,
Rebekah Asselin and
Lily Overton set a new DMR record by crossing the finish line in a time of 11:32.70. The old record had stood for more than 15 years.
Outside of that,
Jade Celestine qualified for the 60-meter hurdles semifinals tomorrow afternoon. She had a time of 8.96 in the event. Sticking with the sprints group,
Mickaliliah Vassell had a strong outing in the 200, recording a time of 25.54.
Laurie-Ann Desormes rounded out the sprints with a time of 7.79 in the 60-meter dash.
Jumps wise, WMU dominated the long jump, having four student-athletes finish in the top 12.
Sandra Ferrari was the top Bronco, claiming third place with a top leap of 5.76 meters. In fifth place,
Laurine Elisa Marimon earned a PR with a mark of 5.74 meters.
Anichka Malachi (10th, 5.49 meters) and
Layla Wallace (12th, 5.42 meters) were also strong in the event.
Looking at the throws squad, the shot put team was on top of their game.
Lane Hagens led the way with a top mark of 13.83 meters.
Sierra Sommers was strong as well, registering a throw of 12.70 meters. Last but not least,
Tess Van Dyk was able to notch a mark of 12.48 meters.
Moving to the distance crew,
Lillian Zelasko and
Larissa McGrath were great in the 5K. Zelasko had a time of 16:51.14, while McGrath was able to finish in 17:23.90.
