INDIANAPOLIS – A close back and forth game ended in a 2-1 loss for Western Michigan men's soccer at Butler.
Western Michigan was only seven seconds away from its third point of a season. But a goal from the Butler Bulldogs in the waning moments Friday night instead handed the Broncos a 2-1 loss. WMU's offense continued its double-digit streak with 12 shots while graduate forward
Piero Sabroso recorded his first goal as a Bronco. Defender Braxton Arapachinda also picked up his third point of the season with an assist.
"That was a really disappointing result on the road," said Head Coach
Chad Wiseman following the match. "We make the game extremely difficult on ourselves time after time. I thought Butler's goalkeeper was the difference maker tonight. He stopped a penalty kick and came up big on a couple other moments late in the game against us."
Butler controlled possession early at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl, resulting in the Bulldogs scoring the first goal of the match in the 30
th minute. But Western Michigan turned the tides of the momentum in the last 15 minutes of the first half. The Broncos offense added three shots and four corners to close out the first half, stumping butler as they found the equalizer in the 43
rd minute.
WMU was awarded a corner kick in the 43rd minute. Arapachinda took the corner from the left side and crossed the ball to the bottom corner of the six where Sabroso was waiting. Sabroso raised up for the header, giving Western Michigan its only score of the contest as they headed into the locker room for half time.
Early in the second half the Broncos had a chance at the go-ahead goal with a penalty kick for Sabroso in the 58
th minute after he was taken down inside the box by a Bulldog defender. Butler goalkeeper Aurie Briscoe made the initial save, but the rebound was loose in front for a second opportunity. Sabroso was able to get another shot off, but the Bulldogs cleared the chance.
WMU continued its offensive attack with five more shots over the next 10 minutes. Western's closest chance came from forward
Roni Sylejmani in the 59
th minute. Sylejmani put a shot almost on net at the top of the six that bounced off the crossbar and up out of play. The Broncos put their last shot on target in the 79
th minute that was just barely saved by Butler.
But it was the Bulldogs who ended the match with two points. With only seven seconds left on the clock a Butler forward beat out two WMU defenders, making it a 2-1 game. Without enough time for a counterattack, Western Michigan suffered its fourth loss of the season.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Broncos who return to action on Tuesday evening. WMU will face its toughest test yet with the 11
th ranked Akron Zips on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Kick-off from FirstEnergy Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
