KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team had its best offensive output of the season in a 9-0 victory against the Adrian Bulldogs.
An almost 45-minute rain delay didn't hamper the Broncos in the slightest on Monday night as the team scored a decade-best nine goals on the Bulldogs. WMU had goals from seven different goal scorers, including a brace for both forward
Piero Sabroso and forward
Jonathan Stout. But it was forward Sahel Yassen who led the team in shots with five attempts and two on target. Yassen also assisted on two goals to add two points to his season total.
Western Michigan found the back of the net early, scoring its first goal in only the fifth minute of the match. Sabroso had his first tally of the night after a throw in from defender Braxton Arapachinda. Sabroso was right in front of the net, to the right of the Bulldogs' goalkeeper, to tap in the first goal of the match. Only nine minutes later, WMU added its second goal, this time from Stout in the penalty arc on a cross from Yassen.
Stout recorded the second goal of his brace a minute and 19 seconds later on a rebound that came off the top of the net. A shot from Yassen came off the crossbar and bounced down in front of the goal line, where Stout was able to put it in the top right corner. The Broncos' next goal came 25 minutes later when midfielder
Braden Stevanovic had his first career goal on a long shot from midway in the offensive zone.
WMU's final goal of the first half came after a yellow card was issued to Adrian's goalkeeper. The yellow card gave forward Alex Markovski his first career penalty attempt in the 41st minute. Markovski buried the PK in the top right corner of the net for his second career goal to make it a 5-0 game after 45 minutes.
The Broncos continued their high-scoring ways in the second half, adding four more goals in the final 45 minutes. Three minutes into the second frame, defender
Carter Cormier had his first career goal off an early corner kick. Almost 10 minutes later, Western Michigan made it a 7-0 game when midfielder
Liam Smith put the ball in the bottom left corner on a quick feed from Stevanovic at the top of the penalty area.
The final two goals of the game for WMU happened in the last 10 minutes of the match. The eighth goal was Sabroso's second of the match in the 81st minute, right in front of the goal. Sabroso slid to kick the ball into the net, ending up in the net himself on the score. The Brown and Gold's last score came with 14 seconds remaining in the match. Defender Braxton Arapachinda added his second goal of 2025 from outside the top of the penalty arc for the 9-0 result.
Nine goals was the Broncos' highest-scoring match since 2015. Western Michigan had eight goals against St. Bonaventure on Sept. 11, 2015, and has not scored more than nine since a 10-goal game at IPFW in 1988.
WMU returns to action at the end of the week for its first Missouri Valley Conference game of the season. The Broncos welcome the Belmont Bruins to The Farm on Friday, Sept. 26, for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
