MADISON, Wis. – The Western Michigan University men's soccer team led in every offensive statistical category but one on Friday night in a 1-0 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers.
"I thought we controlled the entire match. We really had Wisconsin on their heels," said Head Coach
Chad Wiseman following the Broncos first contest away from WMU Soccer Complex. "We created some great attacks today in the run of play, kept them locked into their own end, and generated some great secondary looks."
The Broncos had their best offensive performance yet of 2025, racking up 10 shots at McClinton Track/Soccer Complex with half of those shots ending up on target. Western Michigan got in front of Badger goalkeeper Matisse Hebert early with a shot in the first four minutes of the match. WMU led the offensive side of the game going into halftime with six shots to Wisconsin's two.
"Our set piece action tonight was on point, and we made some good decisions where to go with the ball, creating three-to-four-point blank looks." Four of Western's five shots on goal came in the first 45 minutes of the game, led by sophomore midfielder
Gabe Villagomez with two opportunities.
The Broncos also created several opportunities in the second half with five corner kick chances. But it was Wisconsin who scored the lone goal of the match in the 68
th minute just after WMU had been called offsides in its own attacking end. Western Michigan added two shots in the final 10 minutes, coming close to finding the equalizer. "At the end of the day, those who don't score get scored on," said Wiseman of the match's result.
Four Broncos had multiple shots on the night with Villagomez being the only player with multiple shots on goal. Also adding two chances for WMU was defenders
Braxton Arpachinda and
Emiel Nieuwhof and forward
Henrik Boer. Goalkeeper
Alex Lindewirth played a career-high 90 minutes in net with two saves on the Badgers.
