Women's Soccer Defeats Creighton in Home Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team used a strong second half to secure its first win of the season. The Broncos defeated Creighton, 2-0, on Thursday evening at the WMU Soccer Complex.

Abby Werthman and Drew Martin scored the goals for WMU, while Mikayla Coore-Pascal, Justina L'Esperance, Avery Peters and Werthman picked up assists. Freshman goalkeeper Reagan Sulaver made two saves and collected her first career shutout and win.

FIRST HALF
Both teams came out aggressive in the opening 45 minutes, with WMU earning a corner kick in the first two minutes. Nothing would come of the chance and Creighton would take it down the field for the first shot of the game. Sulaver would handle the chance and keep the score tied at 0-0.

Sulaver would make another save in the 11th minute before Coore-Pascal had WMU's first shot of the game blocked out front for a corner kick. A little bit after that, Peters ripped a shot on net that was scooped up by the Creighton keeper.

Neither team would find much offense down the stretch and the game would remain tied 0-0 heading into the half.

SECOND HALF
WMU took control of the second half, getting an early chance off of a corner kick. Ava Beckett had her shot miss just wide of the net. However, not too long after that, Werthman broke through for her second goal of the season, ripping a shot by the Bluejays' keeper to make it 1-0 in the 64th minute.

The Broncos kept their foot on the gas, getting another look from Beckett in the 72nd minute. WMU scored another goal in the 80th minute after some nice passing. Werthman gave the ball to Peters who found Martin in the middle of the field. She beat the keeper to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.

Madi Canada tried her luck one last time late in the game, but her shot just missed. The Brown and gold would go on to win by a final score of 2-0.
