KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan baseball team got a complete game shutout from
Joey Wizceb in game one and then another strong performance from its pitching staff in game two as it swept a doubleheader from Central Michigan, 6-0 and 4-2, on Saturday to complete a sweep of the three-game weekend series between the two rivals. It was WMU's first series sweep over CMU since 2008.

Wizceb was dominant in the opener, limiting the Chippewas to three hits in a complete game shutout. It was the first nine-inning, complete game shutout by a Western Michigan pitcher since Keegan Akin blanked Ohio over nine innings on May 13, 2016.
The visitors did not have multiple baserunners in the same inning until the seventh, when they collected a pair of singles, but the southpaw buckled down and got a ground ball to get out of the inning unscathed. The final out of the seventh was the first of seven in a row retired by Wizceb to end the ballgame. The shutout was WMU's third of the season, tied for most in the conference.
Western Michigan's offense got Wizceb the lead in the second. After
Grady Mee notched a one-out single and stole second,
Connor Ostrander drove him in with a double to open the scoring. Moments later, Ostrander scored all the way from second on a wild pitch. An error kept the inning alive for the Broncos and they took advantage, with
Michael Maloney coming through with a two-out base hit to make it 3-0.
Maloney was at it again in the fifth, shooting a base hit the other way to bring
Tanner Mally home.
In the sixth,
Lucas Rick launched a solo shot, his seventh home run of the season. Mee then capped the first game's scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.
Western Michigan grabbed an early lead in game two as well, with
Dylan Nevar starting things off with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The home run was Nevar's seventh of the season, tying him with Rick for the team lead.
Reese Gaber got the ball for the Brown and Gold in game two and kept the Chippewas off of the scoreboard over his 5.0 innings of work.
The score remained 2-0 until the sixth, when Central Michigan scratched across a pair to even it up at 2-2.
Maloney once again came through with a clutch knock in the seventh, finding a hole on the left side of the diamond to score
Brendan Harrity and put the Broncos back on top. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Rick, who coaxed a third consecutive free pass from the CMU pitching staff to make it 4-2.
Turner Doran took care of things from there for WMU. The right-hander held the visitors scoreless over the final 3.0 frames and racked up four strikeouts to earn the win and seal the weekend sweep.
Next up for Western Michigan is a trip to Valparaiso on Tuesday. First pitch against the Beacons is scheduled for 4 pm on
