KENT, Ohio – The Western Michigan baseball team rallied late to force extra innings, but ultimately dropped a 10-9 decision in 10 innings at Kent State on Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 9-7 entering the ninth, Western Michigan put together a rally.
Diego Pena and
Brendan Harrity started the frame with back-to-back singles, putting the tying runs on base. For Harrity, it was his career-high tying fourth hit of the afternoon. One out later,
Michael Maloney ripped a double to right to score Pena and get Harrity down to third.
Lucas Rick then hit a fly ball to center field, and Harrity raced home just ahead of the throw to tie the score.
Turner Doran retired the Golden Flashes in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest into extra innings. Doran kept the Broncos in it late by working a season-high 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Kent State hit a walk-off home run to end it and complete the series sweep.
Western Michigan opened the scoring in the first, when
Dylan Nevar launched a solo shot to right field, the first of his career-high tying four hits in the ballgame. It was the redshirt senior's team-leading eighth home run of the season and 37th of his WMU career, one away from tying former teammate
Cade Sullivan's all-time record of 38.
Kent State tied it up with one of its own in its half of the first.
The Broncos moved ahead again in the third, as Maloney plated a run with an RBI single, but the hosts answered in the bottom of the inning to even it up again at 2-2.
Western Michigan regained the lead with three two-out, run-scoring singles in the fourth by Harrity, Maloney and Nevar.
The Golden Flashes pulled two back in the fifth, trimming WMU's edge to 5-4.
The back and forth continued in the sixth, as the Broncos restored their three-run cushion on an RBI single by Nevar and bases loaded walk issued to
Connor Ostrander.
Kent State answered with five in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead, 9-7, a lead the hosts held until WMU's ninth-inning rally.
