DEKALB, Ill. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team fell on the road at Mid-American Conference leaders, Northern Illinois, 5-2 on Sunday.
DOUBLES
The Broncos started off strong, taking the doubles point from the Huskies.
Christine Gouws and
Marielou Baudouin gave WMU the early advantage with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Isabella Righi and Lucia Recora.
Audrey Smitek and
Lola Glantz then secured the point for the Broncos with a 7-5 win at No. 1 over Maria Dzemeshkevich and Nataly Ninova.
SINGLES
NIU tied it up at 1-1 with a win at No. 3 by Yecora over
Frida Weijerman 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Huskies then took the lead, 2-1, when Ninova defeated Baudouin at No. 4 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. The Huskies then got within match point when Dzemeshkevich downed Glantz an No. 1 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Gouws cut the lead to 3-2 with a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Irmak Baduk but Righi downed Smitek in two sets at No. 5 to seal the win for NIU.
Western Michigan is back in action on Friday, hosting Buffalo at 12 p.m. and then heads down to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami on Sunday.
