KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan trio of
Reese Gaber,
DJ Thompson and
Turner Doran combined to toss a no-hitter on Sunday as the Broncos closed out their weekend series against The Citadel with a 6-0 victory.
FINAL SCORE: Western Michigan 6, The Citadel 0
LOCATION: Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field (Kalamazoo, Mich.)
RECORDS: Western Michigan (8-21) | The Citadel (18-15)
W: Reese Gaber (2-3) |
L: Chandler Anderson (1-1)
It was the 17th no-hitter in program history for WMU and its first since John Stewart threw a perfect game against Akron in 1997.
Reese Gaber got things started for the Broncos. An error and a walk helped create some early trouble for the southpaw, but he picked up three strikeouts to keep The Citadel off of the scoreboard in the opening frame. Gaber erased a few walks with a pair of pickoffs and also induced a 4-6-3 double play in the fifth to limit the visitors' offensive chances. In all, he went 6.0 innings and piled up a season-high seven strikeouts to collect his second win and WMU's second shutout of 2025.
DJ Thompson took over in the seventh, and had a hit batsman erased on a line drive double play to first baseman
Avery Thielman. Thompson faced the minimum over his 2.0 innings of work.
Turner Doran came on to close it out in the ninth and retired the Bulldogs in order to seal it for Western Michigan.
The Broncos got the lead for Gaber and company in the third.
Lucas Rick got the scoring started with an RBI double, and Thielman then brought
Michael Maloney home with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The score remained 2-0
until the bottom of the eighth. Rick delivered two more runs with his second double of the afternoon, Thielman plated pinch runner Marwynn Matthew Jr. with a single and
Connor Ostrander capped the frame with an RBI double.
Western Michigan continues its homestand on Wednesday as it welcomes Goshen College to Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 pm. For tickets to any WMU baseball home game, visit
