The Broncos had a season-high 18 hits on Friday, and followed that up with 15 more on Saturday. Each of the top three batters in the WMU lineup,
Tanner Mally,
Michael Maloney and
Dylan Nevar, recorded three hits and scored twice.
Connor Ostrander and
Brendan Harrity both had a pair of knocks, and Ostrander collected a team-leading three RBIs while reaching base four times.
Mally got the Western Michigan offense going early, opening the game with a base hit. The sophomore then stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on an
Avery Thielman single.
Northern Illinois answered with two each in the first and third frames to move ahead, 4-1.
The Broncos came right back with three in the top of the fourth to tie it up.
Grady Mee led off the frame with a solo shot, his third of the season. Later in the frame, Maloney knocked a single the other way to plate
Chris Akers and Harrity, evening the contest at 4-4.
Northern Illinois loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but
Adam Lehmann quashed the threat with an inning-ending strikeout. Lehmann struck out four in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen to earn his second victory of the campaign.
Western Michigan broke the deadlock in the very next inning. The Brown and Gold started the sixth frame with three straight singles, the last of which was an RBI knock from Nevar to put WMU back in front. With that base hit, Nevar passed former Bronco Chris Lewis (2007-10) for the program's all-time total bases record.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the frame, Ostrander delivered a two-run single to extend Western Michigan's advantage to 7-4.
After NIU scratched across a run in the seventh, the Broncos came right back with a tally of their own in the eighth, as Akers brought
Diego Pena around to restore the three-run cushion.
The Huskies briefly made it a two-run game once again with a run in the home half, but Western Michigan countered with a pair in the ninth. Nevar collected another run-scoring single, and Ostrander drew a bases loaded walk to make it 10-6.
Turner Doran finished the job from there for the Brown and Gold. The right-hander collected a season-high five strikeouts over the final 3.0 innings of the contest to earn his first save of the year.
The Broncos go for a sweep of their weekend series against the Huskies on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
