WMU Dance Team Named D1 Jazz National Champions

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Western Michigan dance team are the 2025 DI Jazz National Championships after winning at The College Classic over the weekend.

WMU started the competition winning its group with a score of 91.20, advancing to the finals alongside Central Michigan, Florida Gulf Coast, Ohio, Eastern Michigan and South Alabama. In the finals, the Broncos scored a 93.74, edging out the Bobcats, who finished with a 92.98.

"First I want to thank the entire Kalamazoo and Western Michigan community for the well wishes and congratulations these past few days," said WMU Dance Team head coach Susan Blount. "The 20 members of the WMU Dance Team have put in an immense amount of work all year to be where they are today. All season long, they held their heads high with confidence, but remained extremely humble throughout the season. This team, Team Two, could not be more deserving of winning a National Championship."

Western Michigan also competed in the D1 Team Performance for the first time in its history, finishing runner up with a score of 87.98, with Towson taking the top spot.

"I want to give a special thank you to the three members of our team who spent countless hours since August on the choreography. Thank you to seniors Tessa Anderson and Allie Joyner and junior Annabel Bernicky. I'm so proud of you all and thank you."

"We are more than thrilled to be the 2025 D1 Jazz National Champions! For the first time since 2007, we are honored to bring this back to the city of Kalamazoo and Western Michigan. It was an honor to advance directly to finals being the only team to score above 90 points (out of 100) out of 23 teams from around the nation. We worked hard to stay humble to keep our spot and it paid off. I want to thank Rachel Siegel for setting this piece on our team and trusting my ideas. I also want to thank Erica Maurer for coming to work with the team during our process. I also want to thank all the members of the team for putting their minds together to make our piece special to them. As this only being my second year coaching I am extremely proud of myself and the whole team for bringing this program to new heights. I will forever cherish Team Two and am excited for the future of WMU Dance Team! Go Broncos!"
