Hockey Earns 25th Win of Season

OXFORD, Ohio – Western Michigan collected its NCAA leading 25th win of the season with an 8-3 victory over Miami on Friday night at Goggin Ice Center.

WMU got goals from seven different players, with Zach Nehring tallying two on his birthday. Wyatt Schingoethe, Alex Bump, Zack Sharp, Tim Washe, Ty Henricks and Joona Väisänen all had goals on the night as well.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos took control of the game early, getting a pair of looks from Brian Kramer and Bump. WMU would breakthrough shortly after, as Grant Slukynsky stole a puck in the offensive zone and fired a pass over to Schingoethe. He backhanded a shot over the shoulder of Miami's goaltender to give the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead just over six minutes into the game.

After that goal, Slukynsky found some space in the slot and ripped a shot on net. It hit both posts and stayed out of the net. A little bit later, Western Michigan would commit the first penalty of the night. The RedHawks got five shots on net, but Hampton Slukynsky saved all of them to help the Broncos get back to full strength.

Miami would get on the board with under three minutes to play in the frame. The two teams would head to the second 20 minutes of action tied at 1-1.

SECOND PERIOD
The Broncos came out firing in the second period, getting a goal from Bump 31 seconds in. The tally was his 17th of the season. WMU wasn't done there, as Nehring put the Brown and Gold in front 3-1 just about 20 seconds later.

Just after that, Western Michigan earned its first power play of the night. The Broncos got two shots, but Miami worked back to full strength. However, less than 40 seconds after the man advantage expired, Sharp lit the lamp for his fourth goal of the season. That made it 4-1 WMU not even five minutes into the period.

The RedHawks would get one back with under five minutes to play in the middle frame, but Western Michigan would fight back in a big way. About 30 seconds after Miami's goal, Nehring found the back of the net for his second goal of the night.

Less than a minute after that, Washe tapped home a rebound out front to make it 6-2 Broncos with under three minutes to play in the period. However, Western Michigan wasn't done there. Henricks ripped a shot into the back of the net off of a faceoff win by Cam Knuble. That put WMU in front 7-2.

Then, with under 10 seconds remaining in the period, Vaisanen fired a shot from the point that beat the goaltender to give the Brown and Gold an 8-2 advantage going to the final 20 minutes of play.

THIRD PERIOD
WMU was called for a tripping penalty early in the final frame, and Miami cashed in to make it an 8-3 game. Western Michigan took control from there, getting a pair of great offensive chances from Vaisanen following the goal.

The Broncos would get a power play late in the third, looking to tack on more goals. Owen Michaels had the best chance on net, nearly getting a ninth goal on the board. The penalty would eventually expire, but Cole Crusberg-Roseen would get another great chance following the power play.

In the end, WMU would go on to close out an 8-3 win to collect its 25th win of the season.
