Western Michigan opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when

Michael Maloney ground ball.
After Akron tied it with one in the second, the Broncos went right back in front in the home half.
Connor Ostrander was hit by a pitch to start the frame, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and was then brought home by
Lucas Rick.
The Zips answered with three in the third and one in the fourth to move ahead, 5-2.
WMU then erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mally got the scoring started, bringing
Avery Thielman around with an RBI single. Later in the frame,
Dylan Nevar was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Mally then raced home on a wild pitch to tie it up. After
Brendan Harrity walked to reload the bases, Ostrander cleared them with a three-run double to put the Brown and Gold in front for good. Thielman then plated Ostrander with a base hit to cap the seven-run outburst.
The Broncos added insurance tallies in the sixth and seventh innings. Ostrander drove in Maloney in the sixth with a ground ball. It was the career-high fourth RBI of the day for Ostrander. Mally scored for the third time in the game on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Following the seven-run frame, Western Michigan's bullpen blanked Akron over the final five innings of the contest.
Joe Shapiro collected his first victory of the season, picking up three strikeouts, including one to escape a bases loaded jam in the sixth.
Turner Doran then came on and kept Akron off of the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings to finish off the sweep.
