SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan softball team battled Notre Dame to a 2-1 loss at UND's Melissa Cook Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore
Casey Fazzini pitched her first career complete game, going the full six innings, allowing just five hits and two runs, while striking out one. WMU's lone run came courtesy of junior
Tristen Head, who hit a solo home run in the top of the second.
Riley Dittmar and
Caitlin Tighe were responsible for the other two of Western Michigan's three hits.
The Fighting Irish got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI double by Addison Amaral, scoring Olivia Levitt. Head hit her second home run of the season to lead off the top of the second to tie it up at 1-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, UND's Caroline O'Brien was up with runners on first and second. O'Brien singled to center field to score Amaral to give the Fighting Irish their lead back, 2-1.
From there, the combination of starting pitcher Kami Kamzik and reliever Shannon Becker shut the Broncos down, striking out a combined five Broncos.
Western Michigan heads to the University of Michigan next Tuesday for a game at 5 p.m. before hosting Miami on Friday and Saturday for its first home games of the season.
