Softball Falls at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Western Michigan softball team fell on the road at Michigan, 12-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Broncos started off strong with Jordan Smith scoring Payton Kelly on a groundout to short stop to make it 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Tristen Head then hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0. The long-ball was Head's third of the season and second-straight game going deep.

Michigan responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning off of a RBI double by Lauren Putz, a fielder's choice by Megan Beemer, and Putz scoring on a wild pitch.

After a scoreless second inning, Smith went deep to center field to give the Broncos a 4-3 lead in the top of the third. The shot was her sixth of the season, the second-most on the team.

Putz hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to give the Wolverines their first and only lead of the game. From there, Michigan added four runs in the fourth inning, two more in the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth to end the game at six innings.

Western Michigan returns to Kalamazoo for its MAC home-opener against Miami Ohio on Friday at 3 p.m. The Broncos and the RedHawks then have a double-header on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
