ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan trio of
Reese Gaber,
Adam Lehmann and
DJ Thompson combined to shutout Michigan, 6-0, on two hits in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. It marks the second straight year WMU has won in Ann Arbor, and the fourth win in the last six overall meetings with the Wolverines.
FINAL SCORE: Western Michigan 6, Michigan 0
LOCATION: Ray Fisher Stadium (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
RECORDS: Western Michigan (2-16) | Michigan (11-9)
W: Reese Gaber (1-2) |
L: Grant Bradley (0-1)
Gaber got the ball rolling on the mound for the Brown and Gold. After allowing a one-out single in the first, the southpaw did not yield another hit to Michigan for the remainder of his outing. He retired nine Wolverines in a row at one point, and set down 10 of the final 11 he faced. In all, Gaber tossed 6.0 scoreless frames, allowing one hit and picking up a pair of strikeouts to earn his first win as a Bronco.
Behind Gaber, Western Michigan turned to
Adam Lehmann, who posted a zero in the seventh inning. After a leadoff walk in the eighth,
DJ Thompson took over on the hill for the Broncos, and proceeded to retire all six batters he faced to slam the door for WMU. It was the first shutout for the Brown and Gold over a Big Ten opponent since blanking Minnesota, 2-0, on Feb. 23, 2013.
Western Michigan pushed across three in the third to give Gaber the lead. After a walk, sacrifice bunt and error got
Nolan Zajac to third,
Tanner Mally brought him home with a ground ball for the first run of the contest. Later in the frame,
Cooper Hums scored on a passed ball, and
Dylan Nevar capped the outburst with a two-out, RBI single.
The advantage stayed at three until the seventh, when Nevar drove in another run with a base hit. The redshirt senior then capped the day's scoring with a line drive two-run homer in the ninth. The four-RBI day for Nevar brought his career total to 173, one away from tying WMU's all-time record.
Western Michigan returns to Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field this weekend for a three-game series against Akron. First pitch for the series opener against the Zips is scheduled for Friday at 3:05 pm. For tickets to any WMU home game, visit
