KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan opened the postseason with a sweep of St. Cloud State, pushing the team to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff this upcoming weekend. That sweep helped WMU garner some more national recognition in this week's polls.
The Broncos held strong at No. 3 in both the USCHO and USA Hockey/The Rink Live polls. However, the Brown and Gold collected five first-place votes in the USCHO poll and one in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live poll. Western Michigan leads the NCAA in wins with 28.
Among NCHC teams, Denver, Arizona State and North Dakota were ranked in the top 20. All three of those teams will be in St. Paul for the Frozen Faceoff with the Brown and Gold. Omaha and Colorado College were receiving votes.
The Broncos will be in action on Friday at 8:30 PM ET at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. WMU will take on North Dakota in the semifinal round. Western Michigan took three out of four games against the Fighting Hawks during the regular season. The Broncos clinched the Penrose Cup against UND back on Feb. 28.
