Broncos Sweep St. Cloud State, Advance to NCHC Frozen Faceoff

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 1 scoring team in the nation finished off a sweep of St. Cloud State, earning a 6-2 victory on Saturday night at Lawson Arena. The win pushes Western Michigan to next weekend's Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul, Minn.

The Broncos got two goals from Alex Bump and Tim Washe, while Garrett Szydlowski and Wyatt Schingoethe each lit the lamp once. Hampton Slukynsky continued his dominant run in net, stopping 18 shots to earn his 13th win of the season.

FIRST PERIOD
St. Cloud State was sent off for boarding in the opening two minutes of the game, giving the Brown and Gold an early chance on the man advantage. The Broncos would get three shots on the power play, but the Huskies worked back to full strength.

However, a few minutes later, a flurry of penalties gave Western Michigan a 5-on-3 power play. WMU took full advantage, with Bump lighting the lamp for his 19th goal of the season to make it a 1-0 game.

Following that, Cam Knuble and Robby Drazner tested their luck on SCSU netminder Isak Posch. He was able to stop both chances, keeping the Huskies down by just one. Late in the period, both teams had a player sent off, and the game moved to 4-on-4. Slukynsky made a save in the closing minutes to help the Brown and Gold carry a 1-0 lead into the second frame.

SECOND PERIOD
WMU was sent off for slashing in the early stages of the second period. Slukynsky made four saves to help the Broncos get back to even strength. After the power play, Schingoethe and Washe each had good looks on net stopped by Posch.

In the back half of the period, Liam Valente rang a wrist shot off of the post. However, Western Michigan's offense would keep pushing forward. The Brown and Gold broke through late in the middle period, as Szydlowski battled in front of the net and pushed a puck by Posch to make it 2-0.

WMU carried that two-goal advantage into the final 20 minutes of action.

THIRD PERIOD
The Broncos carried that momentum into the final period, getting a goal from Washe on a deflection out front not even two minutes in. The goal was his 13th of the season. SCSU would get one back a little bit later on the power play, making the score 3-1 in favor of the home team.

The Brown and Gold had an answer, though, as Schingoethe fired a shot by Posch to restore the three-goal advantage just over 10 minutes into the period. SCSU would pull its goalie with about seven minutes left to try and get back in the game. The Huskies would get one to make it 4-2 with just over six minutes to play.

After that goal, Bump would record his second of the night to push the lead to 5-2. Washe would go on to close it out with his second goal of the night, finishing off a 6-2 victory. The win was WMU's 28th of the season. That leads the NCAA.

UP NEXT
WMU will host the lowest remaining seed at the Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul next weekend. The Broncos made the championship game in their last appearance at the Frozen Faceoff.
