Western Michigan Rally Comes Up Just Short in MAC Quarterfinals

CLEVELAND – Trailing by 18 at halftime, the No. 6 seeded Western Michigan men's basketball team fought all the way back to within two late in the second half, but ultimately fell to No. 3 seed Kent State, 73-66, in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Mid-American Conference Tournament on Thursday night.

Western Michigan finishes the season with a 12-20 overall record, while Kent State improves to 22-10 and advances to face No. 2 seed Miami in Friday's second semifinal.

Owen Lobsinger paced the Broncos with 16 points off of the bench, while Donovan Williams and Chansey Willis Jr. added 12 points apiece. Willis also notched a team-high seven assists and tied for the team lead with six rebounds.

After Western Michigan tallied the first four points of the evening, Kent State netted the next 12 to grab a 12-4 edge in the opening minutes. At 16-8, the Broncos rattled off eight in a row to even the contest at 16-16 at the midway point of the half.

The Golden Flashes countered with 13 straight to ignite a 22-3 surge which put them back in front, 41-22. Kent State took a 43-25 advantage into the locker room.

The Broncos notched the first seven points out of the break as part of a 12-2 run to trim the gap to 45-37 with 16 minutes to play. Western Michigan continued to chip away at the deficit, and Lobsinger hit back-to-back three-pointers to close the gap to two, 55-53, as the contest moved under 10 minutes remaining.

Kent State responded, tallying the next 10 to push its advantage back into double-figures, 65-53. Western Michigan refused to go away quietly, rattling off 11 in a row to trim the margin to 69-66 in the final minute. WMU could not get any closer however, as the Golden Flashes closed it out from there.

The Broncos shot 41.9 percent (26-of-62) for the evening, while Kent State made 47.5 percent (29-of-61) of its field goal attempts.
