SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The Western Michigan women's basketball finished the Mid-American Conference-Sunbelt Conference Challenge 2-0 after a hard-fought 59-50 road win at Texas State on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos (10-12, 6-5 MAC) held the Bobcats to just 31 percent (16-for-52) from the field and forced 20 turnovers. WMU shot 48 percent (19-for-40) from the field and 44 percent (7-fro-16) from three.
Marina Asensio led all Broncos with 13 points, also dishing out six assists and collecting four rebounds. Asensio was clutch in the final minutes, sinking all six of her free throws.
Hannah Spitzley had 10 points, while
Evyn Carrier had nine points and four rebounds off the bench.
Alli Carlson had seven points, five assists and a team-best four steals.
Western Michigan only trailed twice in the game, both early in the first quarter. In the first quarter, WMU held Texas State without a field goal for the final 5:45. Free throws by TSU's Jaylin Foster got the Bobcats within 2, 15-13, at the 7:50 mark in the second quarter, but the Broncos responded with an 8-0 run. WMU went into halftime with a 29-22 lead.
Spitzley scored five straight points to open the third quarter and after a layup by Asensio, WMU led 36-22 just 1:18 in. Western Michigan maintained its advantage but was pressed by the Bobcats midway through the fourth quarter. Texas State went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to just four points, 52-48. But from there, Asensio hit every one of her free throws to extend the lead.
