LAST WEEK
WMU dropped games at home to Bowling Green and on the road at Central Michigan, marking three straight losses since beating Texas State back on Feb. 8.Â
LAST TIME AROUND
The Broncos and Zips battled back on Feb. 5, with the Brown and Gold coming out on top 70-64 in Akron for the team's last win in conference play. The victory was highlighted by graduate student
Hannah Spitzley becoming the 29th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. The 1,000th point came in the fourth quarter to extend WMU's lead to 52-48. Spitzley finished with 22 points on the night, followed by
Marina Asensio's 21 and
Alli Carlson's 12.
Evyn Carrier had eight points off the bench.Â
THE SERIES
Wednesday night is the 52nd meeting all-time between Western Michigan and Akron. With the win in Akron earlier in the month, WMU now leads the series 38-13.Â
LAST IN
Western Michigan currently occupies the eighth and final spot to get into the MAC Tournament. WMU is 6-8 and has Northern Illinois nipping at its heels at 5-9. After Akron, WMU hosts MAC-leaders Ball State on Saturday. The Broncos wrap up the regular season next week at Ohio on Wednesday and at Buffalo on Saturday. The Bobcats are currently 4-10 in conference play and in 10th place, while the Bulls are in second with an 11-3 record.Â
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
Despite the losses, Western Michigan has taken care of the ball over the past three games. In each of the three, WMU has had just 13 turnovers. That marks the lowest number of turnovers in a game by the Broncos since a loss to Central Michigan back on Jan. 25, then they had nine.Â
TOP 10
Hannah Spitzley just needs seven more steals to tie Carrie Moore for 10th all-time in career steals. Spitzley has a career-high 60 this season, averaging 2.5 per game. If she manages 11 steals over the rest of the season she will tie Deja Wimby (2018-19) for 10th-most steals in a season by a Bronco.Â
ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan hosts Ball State on Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to the start, the Broncos will celebrate their seniors. Tickets are available at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets.Â
