KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team went 4-0 over the weekend with home wins against Butler (6-1), Purdue Northwest (4-0), Eastern Illinois (7-0) and Wayne State (5-2) at West Hills Athletic Club.
FRIDAY RECAP
WMU opened the day with the 6-1 win over the Bulldogs. The Broncos had to battle into a tie-breaker to earn the doubles point.
Ashton Adesoro and
Jack Davison tied it up at 1-1 after BU won at No. 1 doubles. The point came down to Anthon Arzhankin and
Oscar Corwin at No. 2. They battled Riccardo Baldi and Arnesh Singh to a 6-6 tie and then prevailed 7-2 in the tie-breaker set.
WMU rolled in singles with Arzhankin, Adesoro,
Brogan Pierce and Corwin all winning in two sets. Davison picked up Western Michigan's sixth point with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Later that night the Broncos swept the Golden Lions. Pierce and
Drew Evans won at No. 1 doubles and the Arzhankin and Corwin duo secured the point. In singles, Adesoro got bumped up to No. 1 and won 6-1, 1-0 after Alex Lozano had to withdraw. Corwin made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Daniel Melero before Davison clinched the win the a 6-2, 6-3 win over Francisco Lanusse at No. 4. The remaining three singles matches went unfinished.
SUNDAY RECAP
Sunday started off with a 7-0 sweep of the panthers. Arzhankin and Corwin earned a 6-1 win at No. 2, while Adesoroa and Davison won 6-1 at No. 3 to give the doubles point to WMU.
Adesoro, Pierce, Corwin,
Matej Kajzer,
Alex Antonopoulos and
Dimitri Moriarty all defeated their EIU counterparts in two sets.
Later in the afternoon, the Broncos picked up the 5-2 win over the Warriors. Wayne State took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Arzhankin tied it up at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Cedric Drenth. Kajzer gave WMU the lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Sam Knowles before Adesoro made it 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 over George Day. Davison then clinched the match victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Luis Klaus. Corwin picked up the fifth and final Bronco point with a 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 3 over Tom Wasner.
Western Michigan wraps up non-conference play with a match at the University of Michigan next Friday at 6 p.m.
