ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 5-2 loss at No. 14 Michigan on Friday night.
The Broncos (10-6) started off strong by taking the doubles point from the Wolverines. WMU's
Brogan Pierce and
Drew Evans dismantled the 70th-ranked team of Benjamin Kittay and Patron Hanchaikul at No. 1, 6-1, to give the Broncos the early advantage. WMU secured the doubles point with
Ashton Adesoro and
Jack Davison winning at No. 3, 7-5. The No. 2 doubles battle of Western Michigan's
Anton Arzhankin and
Oscar Corwin went unfinished deadlocked with UM's Will Cooksey and Alex Cairo, 6-6.
In singles, Michigan won at No. 4, 5, 6 and 2 in two sets each to secure the match win. WMU's lone point came from Arzhankin, who bested 55th-ranked Kittay at No. 1 6-4, 6-4. Pierce took Bjorn Swenson to three sets, falling 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-6.
Western Michigan opens Mid-American Conference play with a pair of home matches next weekend. The Broncos host Buffalo on Friday at 1 p.m. and then Toledo comes to town on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
