Broncos Fall on the Road at CMU

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's basketball team fell on the road to rival Central Michigan, 56-43, at McGuirk Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Hannah Spitzley led the Broncos (10-15, 6-8 MAC) with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting and seven rebounds. WMU was held to 28.6 percent from the field (16-for-56) and were out-rebounded 47-30. CMU freshman guard Madi Morison led all scorers with 26 points.

Western Michigan got out to a 6-4 lead early in the first quarter but it was erased by a Morrison three-pointer. Evyn Carrier then took the lead back with a layup with 6:09 left in the opening quarter, but it was the last lead that the Broncos would hold. CMU ended the quarter on a 9-3 run and had a 16-11 lead heading into the second.

A three by Spitzley cut the lead to 18-16 with 6:48 to play in the half, but the Chippewas went on another run to widen their lead. A pair of Marina Asensio free throws were able to cut the lead back down to four but Central Michigan took a 26-20 lead into the locker rooms.

Artemis Kouki hit a three to open the third quarter, cutting the lead to 26-23. Central Michigan responded and expanded its lead to eight before Spitzley hit another triple to keep it within five. WMU then went scoreless for the next three minutes, while the Chippewas were able to extend the lead and head into the fourth quarter up 45-33.

Western Michigan's first basket in the fourth quarter did not come until there was 5:58 left to play, when Alli Carlson drove the lane for a layup. Another Spitzley three cut the lead to nine points, but that was the closes that the Broncos got for the rest of the quarter.

Western Michigan returns home to University Arena for its final two home games of the season. The Broncos host Akron on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then MAC-leaders Ball State on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
