KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics mourns the loss of Lois, who passed away on Feb. 11, 2025.
Ellis, a devoted and longtime supporter of Bronco Athletics, alongside her husband Peter, shared a deep passion for teaching and higher education. Their commitment to students extended beyond athletics, driven by their belief in the transformative power of education to shape future leaders. Together, they established the Lois & Peter Ellis Scholarship to recognize student-athletes who excel academically and in competition.
"Our hearts are heavy not seeing Lois in her regular spot at our Bronco events," said Vice President/Director of Athletics
Dan Bartholomae. "She leaves behind a legacy as a teacher, mentor, philanthropist, and friend to so many of us. Her memory will forever be cherished and honored in Bronco Nation."
She attended the Western Michigan College of Education, where she met Peter, and began a long career in education after finishing her teaching degree from Michigan State. Lois and Peter moved back to the Kalamazoo area in 1964, where they lived for over 60 years.
"Lois had a beautiful heart and was a devoted supporter of WMU Athletics, leaving a lasting impact on the Bronco family," former WMU Director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard said. "Her generosity, especially in honoring her husband through a gift that continues to benefit thousands of student-athletes at The Ellis Academic Center, reflects her lifelong commitment to giving, loving, and uplifting others. Her presence at games, events, and countless gatherings brought joy to so many, and her legacy of kindness and dedication will always be remembered."
The Ellis Athletic Academic Advising Center was funded and named in their honor in 1996. Located on the second floor at Read Fieldhouse, the center serves as a vital resource for WMU student-athletes, providing access to academic services staff, computer labs, tutoring programs, composition specialists, and study tables—all designed to equip student-athletes with the tools and support needed for academic success.
Ellis was named the WMU Woman of the Year in 1998 in recognition of her support and service to Western Michigan. In 2014 she was honored with the WMU Athletics Distinguished Leadership award.
