AKRON, Ohio – Western Michigan junior guard
Chansey Willis Jr. tied his career high with 28 points in a 105-92 loss at Akron on Tuesday evening.
Willis' 28 points are the most scored by a WMU player this season. The Detroit native also collected eight rebounds, four assists and five steals. Joining Willis in double-figures for the Broncos (7-17, 4-7 MAC) were
JaVaughn Hannah (15),
Donovan Williams (13),
Markhi Strickland (12) and
Brandon Muntu (11).
Akron (19-5, 11-0) tallied 11 of the contest's first 14 points to grab the early edge. Just past the midway point of the half, the hosts hit back-to-back three-pointers to push their lead into double-digits for the first time, 30-19. An 8-2 run late in the period got Western Michigan back to within five, 47-42, but the Zips scored the final five points of the half to take a 52-42 advantage into the locker room.
The Broncos slowly chipped away at the deficit and worked the margin down to five, 65-60, with roughly 13 minutes to go. Akron countered with nine of the next 11 points to boost their lead back into double-figures, 74-62.
Just past the halfway mark, Muntu scored nine consecutive WMU points during a 9-2 run which closed the gap to 80-77. At 83-79, the Zips put together a 10-2 stretch to extend the margin back into double-digits, 93-81, and kept the Broncos at bay from there.
Western Michigan shot 42.7 percent (32-of-75) for the evening and tied its season high with 11 three-pointers. Akron connected on 61.9 percent (39-of-63) from the field. WMU was plus-four on the glass (38-34), thanks in part to 22 offensive rebounds.
The Broncos return to University Arena on Saturday afternoon as they take on Miami. Tip is set for 2:30 pm, or roughly 30 minutes after the completion of the Western Michigan women's game against NIU. For tickets to any WMU men's basketball home game, visit
