Broncos Extend Winning Streak to Seven with 4-1 Victory over Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western Michigan extended its winning streak to seven games with a 4-1 victory over Colorado College on Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.

The Broncos got goals from Owen Michaels, Alex Bump, Cam Knuble and Iiro Hakkarainen. Michaels, Bump and Samuel Sjolund all extended their point streaks to seven games in the win. The victory pushed WMU's record to 18-4-1 overall and 11-1-1 in NCHC play.

FIRST PERIOD
Cameron Rowe made four saves in the opening two minutes to keep the Tigers off the board. A little bit later, Brian Kramer and Bump would get nice looks on net for the Broncos. Kaidan Mbereko made both saves for CC.

With about 11 minutes to play in the opening period, Rowe made a sprawling pad save to keep the two teams knotted at 0-0. WMU's offense picked up in the back half of the frame, as Bump and Tim Washe put strong chances on net.

Down the stretch of the period, CC got the game's first power play. The Tigers would get two shots on Rowe, but he made both saves to get the Broncos back to full strength. The score would remain 0-0 going to the second 20 minutes.

SECOND PERIOD
It didn't take long for the Bronco offense to get going in the middle frame, as Michaels collected his 13th goal of the season just 18 seconds in. He danced around a defender in the offensive zone and fired a puck top shelf into the back of the net to make it 1-0 WMU.

Just a few minutes later, Western Michigan made CC pay for turning the puck over. Bump got the puck on his stick and beat Mbereko to make it 2-0 not even five minutes into the period. Then, at about the 10-minute mark of the frame, CC was sent off for interference.

The Brown and Gold got three shots on Mbereko, but the Tigers eventually worked back to full strength. However, just a couple minutes after the penalty expired, Ty Henricks found Knuble in front of the net for his third goal of the season. That pushed WMU's lead to 3-0 with under eight minutes to play in the period.

Down the stretch, Rowe would make a flurry of saves to keep the Tigers off the board. The Broncos carried a three-goal lead into the final period of play.

THIRD PERIOD
Colorado College came out with a sense of urgency in the final period, getting multiple looks in the opening minutes. Rowe was able to make every stop to keep it a 3-0 Western Michigan lead.

CC would eventually get on the board about nine minutes into the frame. However, the Broncos had an answer for that tally, with Hakkarainen beating Mbereko for his sixth goal of the season. He now has goals in three straight games.

A couple minutes after that, WMU would get sent off for hooking. Western Michigan's dominant PK flexed its muscles, holding the Tigers to two shots before getting back to even strength.

Down the stretch, each team would get a few more looks on net. The Broncos would go on to close out a 4-1 victory.
