CLEVELAND -- For the first time in the history of the Mid-American Conference, one team took home the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and the Vern Smith Leadership Award and that program was Western Michigan.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback
Broc Lowry was tabbed MAC Offensive Player of the Year, while senior defensive end
Nadame Tucker earned both the MAC Defensive Player of the Year and the Vern Smith Leadership Award as the MAC's overall Most Valuable Player. Finally, head coach
Lance Taylor was voted the MAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Broncos to a 7-1 record in conference play and finishing atop of the MAC standings.
The Broncos also had seven players named to the All-MAC team. Lowry, Tucker, graduate student center
Raheem Anderson II and redshirt junior offensive tackle
Chad Schuster all were voted First Team honors. Graduate student
Tate Hallock was named Second Team All-MAC, while junior running back
Jalen Buckley and junior cornerback
Joshua Franklin earned Third Team honors.
In conference play, Lowry finished with 698 yards rushing and a MAC-leading 11 rushing touchdowns. He also threw for 1,185 yards and five touchdowns. Lowry rushed for a touchdown in seven of the eight games, all seven of the Broncos' victories.
In the eight MAC games, Tucker had 12.0 tackles for loss and a MAC-best nine sacks. The New York, N.Y., native also forced two fumbles and helped the Bronco defense allow just 14.5 points per game and just 284.5 yards per game.
Taylor becomes the first Bronco coach to earn Coach of the Year honors since P.J. Fleck in 2016. WMU was picked to finish seventh in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll, but under Taylor's guidance the team went 7-1 in conference play. The seven wins is tied for the second-most in program history, matching the 2000 and 1988 teams.
