Bronco Offense Explodes in Series-Opening Win Over Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – Western Michigan's offense dominated in a 7-2 victory over Omaha on Friday night at Baxter Arena. The win pushed WMU to 8-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in NCHC play.

Ty Henricks and Zaccharya Wisdom lit the lamp twice, while Zach Nehring, William Whitelaw and Bobby Cowan each found the back of the net once. Eleven players recorded at least one point in the game, with eight having multi-point outings.

FIRST PERIOD
After a Cole Crusberg-Roseen shot was saved, the Broncos were given a hooking penalty. Omaha cashed in to go up 1-0 under three minutes into the game.

However, from there, the Brown and Gold started to settle in and control play. Zack Sharp and Cole Spicer had strong looks on net in the middle portion of the period. Eventually, the Mavericks were sent off for roughing, giving WMU its first chance on the man advantage.

The Broncos got four shots on net, including a quick wrister from William Whitelaw. But Omaha was able to get back to even strength. The Mavs wouldn't be at full strength for long, as they were assessed a major and game misconduct for boarding moments later.

Western Michigan carried 4:20 of power play time into the second 20 minutes of action.

SECOND PERIOD
The Brown and Gold capitalized on the major penalty, getting a rebound goal from Whitelaw. The tally was his seventh of the season and tied the game at 1-1. Not too long after that, Henricks tipped a puck out front to push Western Michigan in front 2-1.

Omaha eventually got its skater back, but the Bronco offense didn't slow down. In the middle of the period, Ryan Kusler slid a pass to Nehring skating up the ice. He beat the defense to the goal and hit twine to make it 3-1 WMU.

The Broncos would earn another power play just a few moments later. They would again take advantage of the opportunity, as Henricks fired a shot by the goaltender for a 4-1 lead. The Mavericks would go on to make it a 4-2 game.

But Western Michigan was there to respond. Wisdom took a puck coast-to-coast and beat Simon Latkoczy to bring the visiting team's lead back to three (5-2). To end the period, WMU killed off a high sticking penalty. The Broncos carried a three-goal lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

THIRD PERIOD
The offense didn't slow down in the final frame, as Cowan notched his third goal of the season just over two minutes in. Kusler and Zach Bookman picked up the assists on the play.

WMU kept up the attack, getting more chances from Henricks and Spicer. Eventually, the Brown and Gold would add a seventh goal, as Wisdom backhanded a shot over the shoulder of Latkoczy for his second tally of the night.

As the game progressed, Iiro Hakkarainen and Whitelaw tried to add to the lead. Whitelaw had a breakaway attempt saved by Latkoczy in the back half of the period. Down the stretch, it would be the WMU defense that would stand tall.

Nehring blocked two shots, and the Broncos limited the Mavericks to just one shot on goal over the final eight minutes of play. The Brown and Gold closed out a dominating 7-2 victory.
