ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Western Michigan dropped the series finale against St. Cloud State, 5-1, on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Samuel Sjolund tallied WMU's lone goal, getting assists from
Theo Wallberg and
Grant Slukynsky.
FIRST PERIOD
Hampton Slukynsky made a pair of nice saves in the early going, helping WMU settle things down. That was followed by chances from
William Whitelaw and
Zach Nehring.
However, just about six minutes into the game, SCSU would head to a 5-on-3 power play. The Huskies didn't waste any time, scoring to make the score 1-0. Western Michigan would kill off the remaining time and get back to full strength.
From there, St. Cloud State was given a major penalty, giving Western Michigan five minutes on the power play. The Brown and Gold fired seven shots on net, but SCSU was able to keep all of them out of the net and get back to even strength.
Down the stretch, Whitelaw and
Liam Valente would get great looks on net, but SCSU would handle the chances and go to the intermission with a 1-0 advantage.
SECOND PERIOD
SCSU went up 2-0 early in the second frame, pushing home a rebound out front. A little bit later, the Huskies were given a power play.
They went up 3-0, scoring on the chance with under seven minutes to play in the period. It didn't take long for SCSU to earn another man advantage as the officials sent WMU off for hooking a couple minutes later.
Zaccharya Wisdom had the best chance during that stretch, having a breakaway attempt saved by SCSU's goaltender. The Broncos returned to full strength and trailed 3-0 going into the final period of play.
THIRD PERIOD
Nehring had a chance in the early portion of the third frame, but that shot was saved. SCSU would add a fourth goal moments later off of a weird bounce in front of the net.
Following that, Western Michigan had a pair of opportunities on the power play. The Brown and Gold would generate three shots on goal, but SCSU would return to full strength.
In the back half of the period,
Colby Woogk nearly got the Broncos on the board. The Huskies' goaltender was just able to get a piece of the puck. SCSU would add another goal to make it 5-0 with under five minutes to play.
Sjolund would then net WMU's first goal, getting assists from Wallberg and Slukynsky. Wallberg's helper was his first point as a Bronco. SCSU would go on to close out a 5-1 win.
