Women's Soccer Drops Match at Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team fell to Northern Illinois, 1-0, on Thursday night at the NIU Soccer Complex.

FIRST HALF
The Broncos came out aggressive in opening minutes, as Abby Smothers had a shot blocked out front and Drew Martin had a nice chance saved by the Huskies' goaltender. Despite the pressure, NIU would get on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

Avery Peters tried her luck with a shot in the 26th minute, but NIU was able to just get a piece. Peters and Heidi Thomasma then had back-to-back looks that the Huskies were just able to keep out of the net.

Martin and Abigail Baldridge then sent shots on net that were saved. Even with WMU's constant pressure, NIU carried a one-goal lead into the second half.

SECOND HALF
Western Michigan kept up its attack, seeing a Peters shot missed just wide of the net in the early portion of the second half. From there, Martin pushed a shot left of the net in the 50th minute.

A little bit later, Ava Beckett nearly tied the game. Her shot was just wide of the goal. The Broncos kept up the pressure, getting yet another shot from Beckett. NIU was there to get the ball out of trouble.

The Brown and Gold really started to threaten as the clock ticked down. Martin had a shot saved in the 81st minute before three straight corner kicks. The Huskies' defense tightened up and closed out a 1-0 home win.
