Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Shannon nets game-winning goal in 2-1 victory over Detroit Mercy

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In the final non-conference match of the season, the Western Michigan men's soccer team picked up a big 2-1 win against Detroit Mercy.

After a tough week on the road, the Broncos returned to the WMU Soccer Complex victorious thanks to a late-match goal. Preseason All-MVC selection defender Christian Shannon scored his first goal of the season in the 86th minute to give the Brown and Gold a 2-1 win. Graduate goalkeeper Timi Adams picked up his first win of the season for Western Michigan while winger Liam Smith led the team in shots with four and added his second goal of 2025.

It was a slow start for both teams as they battled in the midfield early on. The Broncos took the first shot of the day in the fifth minute while keeping the Titans mostly out of their attacking third. WMU racked up eight shots in 27 minutes, including multiple blocked shots in a minute flurry. The continued attack from the Brown and Gold led to the first goal of the afternoon as Smith found the net in the 41st minute right in front of the goal line off a long cross from forward Braden Stevanovic.

But Detroit Mercy's offense came out ready to go at the start of the second half. The Titans soon tied the game up in the 53rd minute on a rebound opportunity after a blocked attempt. Western Michigan was able to turn the tides, keeping Detroit Mercy away from the Broncos net in the final 36 minutes of the match. WMU's offense took the last 31 minutes to add five shots and four corner kick opportunities.

With almost half a dozen attempts, the Brown and Gold found the net again for the second time with less than five minutes on the clock. Shannon headed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net after a corner kick service from defender Emil Nieuwhof to give Western Michigan the win. Along with Smith having four shots, forwards Sahel Yessen and Jonathan Stout had two attempts each.

The Broncos return to Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday afternoon. WMU will welcome Northern Illinois to Kalamazoo for a final time as a conference opponent. The Huskies will be moving to the Horizon League in 2026 as the school leaves the MAC. Kick-off for the final MVC match between the Brown and Gold and NIU is set for noon on Saturday, Oct. 11.
