Defense Stifels Minutemen in 21-3 Road Win

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Western Michigan football team picked up its third-straight win and first Mid-American Conference road win of the season after taking down Massachusetts, 21-3, at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bronco (3-3, 2-0 MAC) defense allowed just 260 yards of total yards, including just 57 on the ground. WMU recorded five sacks, led by Nadame Tucker with two, and forced one turnover. Graduate transfer linebacker Sefa Saipaia Jr. led the team with nine tackles and also had 1.5 tackles for loss.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Broc Lowry threw for 163 yards and one touchdown, completing 18-of-25 passes. Lowry also had a game-high 92 yards rushing on 15 carries and a touchdown. Jalen Buckley had 60 yards on 12 carries, while Devin Miles had 41 yards on seven carries and a 25-yard touchdown run.

Lowry connected with 10 different receivers on the day, with Baylin Brooks and Christian Leary each catching a team-high three. Aveion Chenault had two catches for a career-high 51 yards. Graduate transfer tight end Michael Brescia had his first touchdown reception as a Bronco and finished with two catches for 17 yards.

UMASS opened with the ball and drove down the field but had to settle for a field goal after an illegal formation penalty took a touchdown off the board. Derek Morris connected on a 36-yard attempt to give the Minutemen a 3-0 lead with 9:42 left to play in the first quarter.

But that was it. The Bronco defense didn't give up a point after that.

Western Michigan took the lead on a five-play, 72-yard drive that was capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass from Lowry to Brescia. The Broncos used a pass interference penalty and a 36-yard pass play from Lowry to Chenault to get the ball down to the UMASS 8. Lowry then rolled out to find a wide-open Brescia for the easy score.

From there, the teams traded punts and went into halftime with a 7-3 Bronco lead.

The teams traded punts again in the third quarter before Western Michigan got the ball the 50-yard line. Lowry opened the drive with a 15-yard pass to Chenault over the middle but then threw two incompletions to give the Broncos a third and 10 from the UMASS 35. Lowry ran the ball for six yards for a fourth and four. The Broncos went for it, with Lowry throwing a dart to Tailique Williams for the first down. More running by Lowry and Miles got the ball down into the red zone and then Lowry rushed it into the endzone from four yards out to give Western Michigan a 14-3. lead. The rushing touchdown was the sixth of the season for Lowry.

Later in the quarter, Joshua Franklin fumble a punt, giving UMASS the ball at the WMU 18. Tucker sacked quarterback A.J. Hairston for a loss of 10 for the final play of the third quarter. UMASS ended up with a fourth and four from the WMU 13 and opted to go for it. Hairston tried to hit Brandon Hood in the corner of the endzone but the pass was broken up by Isaiah Paul.

Western Michigan took over and matched down the field behind runs by Lowry, Lolo Mataele, Buckley and Williams, getting down to the UMASS 25 after a 14-yard run by Buckley. On the next play, Miles burst around the corner and then dragged three defenders into the endzone, giving the Broncos a 21-3 lead.

The Minutemen mounted a drive after that but it was upended by a Domanick Moon interception.
