Broncos Upend No. 3 Wolverines in Series Finale

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team picked up a 5-2 win over No. 3 Michigan on Friday night at Lawson Arena. The win pushed WMU to 4-2-0 overall.

Grant Slukynsky lit the lamp twice, while Liam Valente, Zack Sharp and Bobby Cowan each found the back of the net once. Ty Henricks was sensational, dishing out three assists. In net, Hampton Slukynsky made 28 saves to earn the win.

FIRST PERIOD
The Wolverines were sent off early for too many men on the ice, giving WMU the game's first power play. William Whitelaw and Cowan got strong looks on net, but UM would return to full strength.

However, Michigan would be sent off again for holding just a few moments later. This time, the Brown and Gold cashed in, as Valente ripped a shot from the circle to push the home team in front 1-0 just over five minutes in.

A little bit later, both teams were called for penalties, and Michigan scored during 4-on-4 hockey. Now tied, Slukynsky made a great save on a UM breakaway to keep things even. Theo Wallberg had a shot blocked from the point as time expired, and the two teams went into the first intermission tied.

SECOND PERIOD
Michigan was sent off again pretty early in the period. This time for holding. UM would lock down defensively and get back to full strength. Both teams were assessed penalties a few minutes later, bringing the game to 4-on-4.

Grant Slukynsky had a great look on net saved by the UM goaltender. Eventually, both teams returned to even strength. The Broncos would return to the power play later in the period, thanks to a roughing call on the Wolverines.

The Brown and Gold would generate a pair of shots on net, but Michigan would get back to 5-on-5. However, just a few moments after the penalty expired, Western Michigan was able to strike. Henricks found Sharp streaking to the net, and he tipped it into the goal for a 2-1 lead.

To end the frame, the Broncos were sent off for interference. The Brown and Gold locked down defensively and didn't allow a goal. Michigan had 15 seconds left on the man advantage to start the third frame.

THIRD PERIOD
The Bronco offense started to heat up in the final frame, as Slukynsky found the back of the net just over 30 seconds in to make it 3-1 in favor of the home team. The goal was his first of the season.

After a few more good chances in the middle of the period, Cowan took matters into his own hands, backhanding a shot by the UM goaltender to make the score 4-1 with under six minutes to play in the game.

Michigan would continue fighting, getting a goal on the power play. However, Slukynsky was able to stop the threat by adding another goal with less than two minutes to play. The goal pushed WMU in front 5-2, and the Broncos cruised to victory from there.
