Broncos Collect Road Victory Against Akron

AKRON, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team picked up its 12th win of the season, defeating Akron by a final score of 3-0 on Thursday night.

June Mullen and Abby Smothers collected goals, while Drew Martin added a pair of assists. The Zips scored on themselves in the first half as well. Reagan Sulaver made one save in net to earn the shutout.

FIRST HALF
The Broncos got an early shot from Martin, which was blocked out front. Smothers then tried her luck on net, and she had her shot just saved by Akron's goalkeeper.

However, in the 20th minute, Martin played a ball into the box off of a corner kick, and Mullen redirected it in for the game's first goal. The Broncos kept up the pressure, getting a shot from Madi Canada a little bit later.

In the 29th minute, WMU got another corner kick. This time, the ball was served into the box and deflected in off of an Akron player for a 2-0 Bronco lead. After a few subs, Ava Beckett nearly made it 3-0 with a shot in front of the net.

The Broncos carried a two-goal lead into the second half.

SECOND HALF
Avery Peters missed a shot just over the bar in the early stages of the second half. That was followed by a strong chance from Mikayla Coore-Pascal, who had her shot just miss the net.

After some back-and-forth action, WMU was able to find the back of the net again. Thanks to some nice passing, Martin was able to find Smothers wide open in front of the net. She put a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal to make it 3-0 with under five minutes to play in the game.

The Broncos didn't back off, as they got one last corner kick with under a minute to play. Nothing would come of the chance, and the game ended with a 3-0 win for the visitors.
