Bronco Offense Explodes in Win at Ferris State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team picked up its first win of the season, downing Ferris State 6-4 on Friday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Broncos had six different goal scorers, seeing tallies from Zack Sharp, Zaccharya Wisdom, William Whitelaw, Zach Nehring, Sam Huck and Owen Michaels

FIRST PERIOD
The Brown and Gold came out on the attack, getting a shot from Liam Valente in the opening 20 seconds. That was followed by a solid look from Michaels. FSU was able to handle both chances, clearing the puck away from danger.

However, the puck wouldn't stay out of danger for long, as Slukynsky stole the puck in the offensive zone and found Sharp wide open in the slot. He fired a wrister by the goaltender to make it 1-0 Broncos not even eight minutes into the game.

WMU kept on pressuring, with Valente and Michaels nearly adding to the scoreboard. FSU was just able to clear the puck out of danger. A little bit later, the Broncos rattled off three consecutive shots out front that somehow stayed out of the net.

Down the stretch, the Bulldogs would earn a power play. Hampton Slukynsky saved one shot on the man advantage, and Western Michigan worked back to full strength. The visitors carried a one-goal lead into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD
The WMU offense got going in the middle frame, exploding for five goals. Wisdom fired one in the back of the net not even a minute into the period for his first goal as a Bronco.

About two minutes later, Whitelaw found some space and ripped a shot into the back of the net for his first goal in the Brown and Gold. That made the score 3-0 just over three minutes into the second period.

Right after that goal, WMU was given a power play, and it didn't take long for the Broncos to strike. Nehring pushed in a pass from Slukynsky to make it 4-0 early in the frame. Ferris got on the board in the back half of the period, but Western Michigan kept its foot on the gas.

Late in the period, Huck tipped a shot out front that found its way in to make it 5-1 in favor of the visitors. The goal was the first of his career. The Bulldogs would strike moments later to make it 5-2.

However, the Broncos weren't done just yet. Getting one last power play chance late in the period, Michaels found the back of the net to make it 6-2 going into the final period of play.

THIRD PERIOD
After a pair of shots were saved by FSU, WMU earned yet another chance on the power play. Iiro Hakkarainen had the best look, firing a shot on net that nearly went in. The Bulldogs would get back to full strength, but that didn't stop Western Michigan's attack.

Cole Crusberg-Roseen and Colby Woogk had shots, and Huck added another look moments after that. Western Michigan was then sent off for interference. Ferris State didn't threaten with many chances, and the Brown and Gold returned to full strength.

The Broncos then got one more chance on the power play. Despite constant chances, FSU would get back to even strength. The Bulldogs scored soon after that to make it a 6-3 game.

Following that, the Bulldogs would keep things interesting, scoring a fourth goal with 57 seconds left. The effort would be too little too late, as Western Michigan went on to close out the win.
