KENT, Ohio -- The Western Michigan University women's basketball team dropped its Mid-American Conference contest at Kent State University Saturday afternoon 80-50. In the loss graduate student Hannah Spitzley paced the Broncos with 18 points, while junior Marina Asensio added 13 points and a game-high eight assists.
During the first quarter Saturday, WMU scored 12 points behind four from Spitzley and five from Asensio. After Kent State built a 7-11 lead with 5:33 remaining in the first, the Broncos rallied and outscored the Golden Flashes 5-3 to pull within two points after a three-pointer from Maggie Stutelberg and a layup from Asensio.
To begin the second quarter, Lauren Audino scored a layup, while Asensio drilled a three-pointer to propel WMU to a 17-16 advantage. Despite the fast start to the quarter, WMU faced a 38-23 deficit at halftime.
In the third, WMU and KSU scored 19 points each. With six and a half minutes remaining, De'Ahna Richardson made a three-pointer, while Spitzley made a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 43-33 in favor of Kent State. However, the Golden Flashes would use a 14-9 run to close the quarter to take a 57-42 advantage entering the fourth.
In the final quarter, WMU scored a total of eight points. Spitzley would convert on an and-one opportunity, Stutelberg made a three-point jumper, and Artemis Kouki made two free throws to lead WMU offensively.
