KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins over Marquette and Ferris State after a double-header at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday.
WMU (3-1) opened the day with a 6-1 win over the Golden Eagles. The Broncos took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. WMU's top pair of Jack Davison and Brogan Pierce dispatched Blake Roegner and Cyrus Ahmad, 6-2. The No. 3 pairing of Ashton Adesoro and Oscar Corwin defeated Evan Glebov and Kristian Blageov, 6-2, to put the Broncos up 1-0.
Pierce gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead after a quick 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over TJ Ryerson. Anton Arzhankin earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Roegner to push the lead to 3-0, while sophomore Matej Kajzer secured the match win with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Blagoev at No. 6. Adesoro added WMU's fifth point with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Ahmad, while Davison rounded out the match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Hugh Perrill at No. 5.
The Broncos made quick work of the Bulldogs in doubles, winning all three matches. Pierce and Davison defeated Kevin Kovacs and Kacper Pasielak, 6-0, at No. 1 to give WMU the early advantage, while Arzhankin and Alex Antonopoulos secured the point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over Alessandro Santangel and Felipe Iser.
Kajzer was the first off the courts in singles, extending Western Michigan's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Eric Kovacs. Corwin made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Iser at No. 4 before Arzhankin clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Santangel at No. 1. Antonopoulos made it 5-0 with a 6-1,7-5 win over Adria Catahan at No. 6, with Davison earning WMU's sixth and final point with a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) decision over Jose Perez at No. 3.
The Broncos head on the road to take on No. 23 Michigan State on Sunday.
