Women’s Hoops to Host Toledo Rockets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team will host the University of Toledo on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:00 PM on ESPN+. The Broncos are looking to win their third consecutive contest and move to 4-1 in Mid-American Conference play. 

Last Time Out 

The Brown and Gold defeated Northern Illinois University on the road 61-57 last Saturday behind a game-high 20 points from graduate student Hannah Spitzley and 14 points from junior Marina Asensio. In the win, head coach Shane Clipfell moved within one victory from tying Fran Ebert (179 wins) for WMU's all-time wins record for the WMU women's basketball team. 

Beyond the arch, redshirt junior Maggie Stutelberg passed Sarah Hurrle (2000-01) for the 21st most three-pointers made in program history. The redshirt junior guard has 77 three-pointers and counting on her career.

As for graduate student Hannah Spitzley, her six three-pointers improved her career total to 105 career treys. The guard is tied with Curleta Harris (1999-03) for the 14th most three-pointers made in WMU women's basketball history. Additionally, after her two steals, Spitzley moved within five swipes from passing Kina Brown (1992-95, 167 steals) for the 11th most steals by a Bronco.  

Scouting The Rockets

Toledo enters the contest with an impressive record of 11-3 (3-1 MAC). This season, the Rockets have seen an abundance of scoring options with 10 different student-athletes scoring in double-figures in at least one game. On the glass, Toledo has out-rebounded its opponent or been tied in each of its last eight games.

The Rockets have two of the top 10 free-throw shooters in the league – Kendall Carruthers is sixth, shooting 83.7% while Sammi Mikonowicz is 10th at 79.7%.  Carruthers is currently averaging 10.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. As for Mikonowicz, she is ninth in the league in both scoring (13.5) and rebounding (5.9). Mikonowicz is notably one of only nine players in the MAC to score at least 20 points on three occasions.

Series History

The Rockets lead the overall series 68-23. The Brown and Gold will look to defeat Toledo for the first time since the 2019-20 season, where the Broncos swept the Rockets in the season series.
