SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened its Spring Season with a double-header split at Notre Dame on Sunday, defeating Duquesne 7-0 before falling to the Fighting Irish 6-1.
DUQUESNE MATCH
Western Michigan wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. National-ranked pairing Brogan Pierce and Jack Davison defeated Keita Duclos and Uvan Patel 6-1 at No. 1. Anton Arzhankin and Drew Evans took care of Teo Papadopoulos and Trancredi Alfano 6-1. At No. 3, sophomore Ashton Adesoro and freshman Oscar Corwin picked up a 6-2 win over Enqrique Lana and Pierce Manning.
All six Broncos won their single matches in two sets. Arzhankin picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 against Duclos. Pierce was slotted at No. 2 and defeated Lana 6-1, 6-1. Corwin beat Patel 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and classmate Davison won 6-1, 6-3 over Chris Cianciotti 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4. Freshman Alex Antonopoulos was at No. 5 and defeated Papadopoulos 6-3, 6-1, while sophomore Matej Kajzer was at No. 6 and took down Manning, 6-1, 6-2.
NOTRE DAME MATCH
The Fighting Irish took the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 and a 6-1 win at No. 2. Adesoro and Corwin were ahead 4-3 over UND's Jameson Corsillo and Yu Zhang when the match was abandoned.
In singles play, Adesoro was the lone Bronco to earn a point. Playing at No. 2, he picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win over Zhang. Pierce's match against Chase Thompson at No. 3 went to three sets. Thompson took the first 6-4, but Pierce won the second in a tie-breaker 7-6 (9-7). The two went to a tie-breaker set, with Thompson coming out on top 10-6.
Western Michigan returns home for two matches on Friday. WMU opens the day against Marquette at 10 a.m. and then battles Ferris State at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played at West Hills Athletic Club and admission is free. On Sunday the Broncos travel to East Lansing to take on the Spartans at 5 p.m.
