Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#4 Men’s Soccer Downs #9 Northwestern in 1-0 Thriller

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The #4 Western Michigan men's soccer team continued its fantastic start to the 2024 campaign with a win over #9 Northwestern 1-0 at WMU Soccer Complex Friday evening. In the victory, Carson Hodgson supplied the game-winning goal from assisting team captain Landon Fisher, which led the Broncos to their second top-10 victory in four games.

"What a great night for a top-10 showdown and the game did not disappoint!" said WMU men's soccer head coach Chad Wiseman.

The Broncos locked in from the opening kickoff and allowed only five shots (three on target) from the Wildcats over the entirety of the contest.

"In the first half, I thought we dominated, had great spells of possession, and had Northwestern on their heels. In many moments they were scrambling and disconnected. We were only missing a goal."

That missing goal would be found in the opening minutes of the second half when Fisher slotted a ball to Hodgson in the 47th minute of the contest.

"These Broncos are showing a great amount of toughness early in the season.  We're forming an identity and continue to be very difficult to play against." said Wiseman.

To begin 2024, the men's soccer team has outscored opponents at an impressive 11:3 ratio through the team's first five games. Last season, WMU had outscored opponents 9:5 through the same span in 2023.

"I think that's probably the most direct team we will see this year, to secure the shutout was big time," Emphasized Wiseman. "I would like to give a big thank you to the community, for showing out once again! They have been treated to some elite-level soccer here in Kalamazoo.  We appreciate you guys!"

Historical Notes:
