HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Western Michigan volleyball team dropped its opening match of the Erie Insurance Invitational, hosted by James Madison, to UC San Diego 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) on Friday evening.

Logan Case collected a double-double for the sixth consecutive contest after posting 32 assists and 14 digs for the evening.
Keona Salesman made it seven in a row with double-digit kills as she paced the Broncos with 11.
Mary Clare Brusek chipped in with eight kills.
Case was one of three Broncos to post double-digits digs on the night.
Andelyn Simkins led the Brown and Gold with 15, and
Carley Piercefield collected a new career-high 13.
UC San Diego got out to an 8-3 lead in the first frame. The Tritons built their advantage out to as many as six, including at 15-9. A three-point spurt helped Western Michigan get to within two, 18-16, but UCSD put the set away by notching seven of the final 10 points.
The two teams traded points back and forth during the early stages of set two, before a five-point burst gave the Tritons a 16-10 lead. Trailing 18-12, the Broncos put together a 6-1 stretch to close to within one, 19-18. UC San Diego came right back with six of the next seven, including the final four in a row to take a 2-0 match advantage.
A 5-1 run put UCSD in front 9-5 in the third set. The Tritons then used a 7-1 stretch to increase the margin to nine, 16-7. A 5-1 spurt helped Western Michigan get as close as 21-16, before UC San Diego put together one final run to put the match away.
WMU continues play at the Erie Insurance Invitational on Saturday as it takes on High Point. First serve between the Broncos and Panthers is set for 12 pm.
