KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The #5 Western Michigan men's soccer team tied the University of Akron Friday evening 1-1. Owen Smith would score the game-tying goal for the Broncos during the 49th minute of the second half.
"There are some very challenging tactical responsibilities when you play an Akron team, we were good in some of those moments but fell short in many others." said WMU men's soccer head coach Chad Wiseman.
Akron would take the lead 1-0 in the 27th minute of the first half.
"We're building this team with many new faces, learning lessons and finding results along the way early in the season." said Wiseman, "Today we didn't get our playmakers on the ball enough, some of that is because of Akron, some of that is because we were too direct at times and some of that is the process of our young players learning."
Overall, Akron out shot WMU 15 to eight during the contest.
"All things considered, I think we walk away feeling good about finding a way to get a result against an Akron team that will win a lot of games this year," said Wiseman.
Exiting the break, Smith would tie the game at one all after converting on a penalty kick in the 49th minute of play. With Smith's goal, WMU now has four individuals through three games played with at least one goal to begin the season. Smith now leads the team in points with four (one goal, two assists).
"We turn the page and welcome Bronco Soccer Fest on Monday, always one of the best days at the farm each year!"

With the tie, WMU extended its streak to 24 games without a loss. The last time the Brown and Gold received a blemish to their record was over one year ago versus then ranked #12 University of Vermont on August 24, 2023.
Overall in the series history, the Brown and Gold hold a 3-1-4 advantage over the Zips in their last eight matches.
